In March of 1665 Governor Richard Nichol's formed the first representative assembly for the
province of New York which consisted of two representatives from each township on Long Island
and two from Westchester. The Governor led the people by the laws set out by the Duke of York,
brother of Charles II. These were known as The Duke's Laws and were in use until c.1686.
